What is Youth in Service?
Volunteering, whether by one or many, changes the lives of those who give and those who receive.
The goal of the Youth in Service Program is to recognize young people for the service they provide to the community and to give them support in connecting to the community.
School campuses enroll in the program at the beginning of each school year and agree to designate a sponsoring group or organization on the campus to oversee the program. Representative youth and sponsors attend a planning seminar in September where they focus on documenting service at their campus, increasing awareness about community resources, and developing strategies for service project implementation. The sponsoring group is responsible for working with other campus organizations to help them document their community service.
In April of each year, the sponsoring group turns in a notebook documenting school wide volunteer efforts. Participating schools are recognized at the Celebration of Service Luncheon and receive an award check to use for volunteer projects the next year.
How Do I Get Involved in Youth in Service?
1. Download and fill out the
Youth in Service Application Packet
by clicking
here:
2007-2008 Youth in
Service Application Packet
2. Keep a notebook of activities. (Be sure to include pictures.)
3. Track your service hours, donations, and fundraisers.
Be sure to contact the
Volunteer Center before you begin keeping your notebook so
that we can keep you in our records. The notebooks are due
at the Volunteer Center in the spring. Notebooks
will be on display at the Celebration of Service luncheon in
May 2008. Your school will present its
accomplishments at this event.
Each participating school
that completes a notebook by the deadline and
shares a presentation at the Celebration of Service
luncheon will receive an award of $500 to go toward future
service project expenses.
The Youth in Service packet will be
available in September 2007.
