What’s Your Why?
When we meet new people, one of the first questions we tend to ask another person is, “What do you do?” Where we work or how we spend our time most often is a defining category for us. It gives us an identity, a name for our self, and it can even provide an implied standing in society or intelligence level.
But, we never ask WHY someone does what they do. Everyone knows what they do and they know how they do it; few of us are actually certain as to why they do it. It is a much deeper question that many people may not have even thought about themselves. WHY do they have the job they have? WHY do they keep coming back to the same organization to volunteer? WHY do they want to develop a new skill set?
Our purpose is not found in the “what” we do, but in the “why.” Everyone has a WHY. It is the cause of believing that inspires us to personally act in a certain way or for a certain cause.
WHY is actually the best place to start with any question, because if a person knows their WHY, that person can almost certainly withstand any HOW life brings them. Your WHY keeps you going on days when you don’t have a WHAT. And, if your WHY is big enough, you will eventually find a HOW for any situation you encounter.
The Volunteer Center is here to help you find your WHY. Through our services and our hearts, we inspire a more engaged community by helping people find their purpose and act on it.
Your WHY is the reason you exist. It is the gift you give to mankind. Everyone has a different answer- and yours is special and needed in a way that’s unique and important, just like mine. “There are two great days in a person’s life- the day we are born and the day we discover WHY.” (William Barclay).
How do you find your WHY?

- Act! The Volunteer Center connects volunteers with agencies that need volunteers. We can help individuals match their passion and interests with available opportunities through our Lubbock community either with individual consultations or through our website portal volunteer listings. We also offer volunteer manager leadership training.
- Connect! Attend one of our monthly Brown Bag sessions to fellowship with other nonprofits. These free sessions are a great way to network with other individuals and organizations to foster collaborations, share resources and ideas, and for brainstorming.
